New York City / Sandy Hook Bay July 4th 2000

July 1st, Saturday - Tall Ships begin to arrive in Sandy Hook Bay Anchorage and begin preparations for the parade. Pleasure craft and excursion boats have the opportunity to get up close and personal.

July 2nd, Sunday - CVA Kennedy and LCC Whitney and LHA Nassau ( with marine detachment) battle group arrives and anchors off of Governor's Island facing the Statue of Liberty. Two U.S. Coast Guard vessels join them.

July 3rd, Monday - At least 45 naval vessels from around the world steam up the Ambrose Channel into New York Harbor one by one with crew at full attention. {Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, India (2), Japan (2), Netherlands, U.K., Pakistan, Peru, Singapore, South Africa, turkey, Italy, Ireland, and Greece}. They will position themselves at anchorage from Ellis Island to the G.W. Bridge.

July 4th, Tuesday - Presidential International Review (1,000 spectators forward) and fly-over review from Kennedy (3-4,000 spectators aft) - AM - 10AM followed by:

a) parade of Tall Ships- 35+ class"A" sailing ships which were previously assembled in Sandy Hook Bay, sail from Verranzano Bridge to George Washington Bridge. Tall Ships then berth at Manhattan (Pier 92), Brooklyn (Atlantic Street), Bayonne MOT, Staten Island (Homeport) and South Ferry.

b) Public visiting aboard Kennedy from South Ferry - 1PM to 4PM.

c) Formal reception and fireworks show (10PM) - 13 fireworks barges anchored in Hudson River, Statue of Liberty and East River.

July 5th, Wednesday - OpSail _ Intrepid (Pier 86) Gala. Pleasure craft Yachts leave NY Harbor.

July 7th, Friday - NYC Parade & Mayor reception at City Hall.

July 8th, Saturday - OpSail Commander's Ball - Navy Blue Angels demonstration (2 days)

July 9th, Sunday - Navy Ships depart NY Harbor.

The week-long New York event (July 3-9, 2000) is the centerpiece of the national celebration and is expected to draw approximately 4 million people to New York City. We anticipate that more than 40,000 spectator vessels will line New York Harbor for the Parade of Sail and the International Naval Review during our nation's 224th birthday celebration.
