We have a winner!! Matt & Alex Ford fishing with their father Robert on Sunday, boated the first striper of the season. They weighed in a 28.5" keeper at Bahrs Landing to win this years prize. They were fishing with Captain Lou Graziano who had them chumming clams in the Keyport Flats. They said that the action was terrific once you read the fish and got them under the boat with clams. The family fishing team from who charter the "Tackle Box" on a regular basis, enjoyed their seafood lunch using their winning $50.00 gift certificate that afternoon. The fords live in Far Hills, N.J..

Minutes after the first weigh, in two locals who where flounder fishing in the Navesink, showed up with a 28+ inch bass. John Matteucci fishing with Chad Hacker and Mike Lamb had a 33lb bass but all were to late to the dock for the prize. On my way home late last night there were numerous guys in Carharts fishing the railing of the Oceanic Bridge. I did spot 2 fish on the sidewalk at midnight. No doubt more were taken in the early a.m.They were using worms and plugs.

Sunday March 6, 2003 The John Murphy/Bob Hunter Clean Ocean Action Flounder Tournament held here at Bahrs Landing on Saturday was won by Ray Koch of West Keansburg . Weighing in with just 5 minutes left in the day, Koch beat out Chad Hacker of Middletown by a small fraction of a pound. Hacker's fish 2.50 lbs looked like it was going to win him the $300.00 prize plus the coveted trophy plaque with but Koch's winner came in at 2.54 lbs. I am glad that we had such an experienced weighmaster in Derry Bennett from the American Littoral Society. Third place went to John Anderson of Pompton Lakes with 1.86 lbs. This years FREE event, with an estimate of 250 participants, took the poor weather in stride and tried to coax the bigger flounder out of the mud. The colder temps, seemed to slow down the day's bight. The winning fish were caught near the Rumson Oceanic bridge near high tide. The winner used night crawlers and clam chum as is bait choice. The free tournament is a charity event to support Clean Ocean Action based out at Sandy Hook. All monies are donated by local businesses and youth organizations who support the very important work that that Clean Ocean Action does for our Shore Communities. Here are some photos of the winners taken at the fun awards party at Bahrs Landing.

I have some reports of small bass being taken up in the bay near Keyport. Still no weigh-ins down our way as of Sunday Morning. STILL LOOKING TO GIVE AWAY $50.00 GIFT CERT. FOR A STRIPER!

March 30, 2003 Elaine B party boat. Capt. Stan "We have seen a big improvement the last 3 trips each trip gets better today (Friday) we averaged 12 to 15 keeper Flounder a person. Water temp is up to 51 we should see some better fishing in the days ahead." Capt. Pete Kwolak started off successfully Thursday with Hook Em Charters from Highlands by running up the Navesink River. Kwolak, his brother Mike, and Capt. Lou Grazioso of Hazlet combined for 32 flounders. All were keepers, and several ran 2 to 3 pounds. Earlier in the week, Kwolak and Grazioso checked the west end of the bay where they encountered water temperatures up to 48 degrees and had some bait readings, though there were no hits during a brief trolling attempt. Duane Mirro of Old Bridge set this year's early standard at The Tackle Box in Hazlet when he weighed an 18 1/2-pound striper which hit clams Friday at Union Beach. Kevin Cornell of Cliffwood checked in Tuesday with a legal striper he caught along with two shorts on sandworms at his local beach. Stosh Szarro of Union Beach wormed in his boat off the Cliffwood flats last Sunday for 10 shorts.

Duane should have weighed in at Bahrs Landing too. He could have won a dinner for 2! We still have not weighed in any stripers.

Don't forget this Saturday is the clean Ocean Action FREE Tournamnet. The "Blessing of the Fleet" comences at 9:00 at Bahrs Landing. Bring your boat and crew for the annual ceremony. We will be serving coffee and Doughnuts. Weigh in by 5:00 on our deck. Kids division plus some fun door prizes.

Keep up to date on this years tournaments at Bahrs and the area at http://bahrs.com/tour201.html

I forgot to mention that the $50.00 gift certificate is still on the table. We have not yet weighed in a striped bass this season. The first KEEPER to be weighed wins a Bahrs Landing Gift Certificate. I did here of some bass being caught up in Keyport on Friday. Good Luck

March 24, 2003 Find your pearl at Bahrs Landing. This bit does not quite qualify as a fishing report but it is close, and besides we only have one boat in the marina so far this season. Candy Grace from New Brunswick found the largest pearl in a oyster that anyone can remember while dining here at Bahrs Landing on Sunday. We usually get our oysters from private beds on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. Grace, a regular customer was extremely excited and was going to see a jewler this week.

Great weather for fishing! The Elaine B party boat has been slowly picking up more and more flounder. Captain Stan has been working the rivers and although frustrated by the cold water temps he is increasingly finding more and more keepers every day.

The COA / Murphy Tournament is being held at Bahrs Landing Saturday April 5th. No Application fee required. $300.00 first place plus door prizes. The ASA, American Striper Assoc., Tournament is set for Memorial Day Weekend May 23-25, 2003. http://bahrs.com/tour201.html

Anglers: Will Hoffman _Bait: pilchards, flies, pinfish _Date: March 4th and 6th _Depth: _Size: 8 - 14 pounds _Water: _bname: Odyssea _email: riverbassfishing@hotmail.com _location: Key West _meth: Fly fishing, Spin fishing _species: Little Tunny comm: Went out with Capt. Rush Maltz on Odyssea Sport Fishing. On Tuesday the 4th ran out about 40 miles to a spot called the P Tower. There were permit, jacks, mangrove snapper, and 3 to 4' barracuda. These fish weren't too aggressive but managed to catch some barracuda, blue runners, and mangrove snapper. Saw about a 60 pound Cobia around the tower but he wouldn't eat. Then started chasing the shrimp boats about 30 miles from Key West. We found all the little tunny you could want. They are very fun on the 8 pound fly fishing outfit I used. There were also some blackfin tuna mixed in but it was very hard to get the baits to them. The captain chummed pilchards and got the blackfin tuna into a consistent feeding at the stern of the boat. One of my friends that was with me put the pilchard as soon as the captain instructed him to drop the bait. This resulted in about a 25 pound blackfin tuna. I thought I had hooked another albacore on an 11 weight rod but it tur! ned out to be a smaller 20 pound blackfin. The fishing was slow but my dad, friend, and I still enjoyed some good fishing. The highlight of this day was when the captain gaffed a 35 pound Cobia after it had resfused to hit a live pinfish. The cobia was lured to the boat with a bucktail and pinfish combination. On Thursday afternoon headed out to do some tarpon fishing in Key West Harbor. It is very similar to bunker chunking only you use shrimp boat bycatch. We were anchored alongside of 4 other charter boats and we all had a lot of hookups but not many fish boated. I managed to get 1 out of about 6 Tarpon to the boat. The Tarpon I caught was about 65 pounds and was released. One of the other charter boats fought a bigger tarpon on 12 pound gear for about 2 hours before the hook pulled. I had a good time with Capt. Rush Maltz. (http://www.odysseafishing.com) He was a very good captain and runs a 28' whitewater with twin mercury engin March 3, 2003

The Winter Flounder Season is now Open. The Bob Hunter COA free flounder Tounament is set for Saturday April 8 http://Events@cleanoceanaction.org/Calender/April.html

Capt. Hal Hagaman has long been among the first to get started with flounder fishing with the Sea Tiger from Atlantic Highlands, but even he has decided to hold off for at least another week due to the water conditions. He reports "Captain Glenn has had the boat out Sat. and Sun. this week and last week and the fishing has been slow for all the boats. We've been catching a few ling on each of the wrecks we've been fishing in the Mud Hole. Not too many blackfish either. We'll be fishing for another couple of weeks and then we'll be going into the ship yard for about 10 days. Fishing for ling and blackfish is probably going to be very slow for the month of March, but the months of April and May are excellent for bottom fishing. So come on down and check us out. We leave at 7:30 a.m. and return at 3:00 p.m. It is best to call the night before just to be sure we will be shaping up in the morning. Call 732-872-7530 or 732-291-4904. Thank you. Capt. Scott"

I have not yet seen anybody fishing for anything. I can't wait to start getting some local reports out and less political issues.

More on the 250 Subway cars for potential artificial reef material.

From a Statement of Clean Ocean Action on Artificial Reefs "New York City Redbird subway cars are not consistent with NJ’s traditional standards of excellence for reef habitat. The subway cars:

Are prohibited from being dumped in New York waters. NY does not want them in their own waters due to environmental concerns.

Contain pollutants of concern.

Do not meet NJ’s traditional standards of 50+ years for reef material, as the thin-gauge steel cars (.0747 inches) will corrode quickly. The sturdy, thick, heavy steel from wheels and undercarriage is removed and recycled. Automobile metal, which has been rejected as reef material, is .05 inches thick.

May be promoted as "free," but will open up our ocean to becoming a convenient, cheap, and easy junkyard setting a dangerous precedent. "

Clean Ocean Action (COA) has been working with the American Littoral Society (ALS) to improve, protect, and expand NJ’s artificial reef program. Recently, with 250 subway cars available, COA, ALS, and several fishing groups have worked with NJ Department of Environmental Protection to develop a solution that will result in the following goals:

Improve, Protect, and Expand NJ’s Artificial Reef Program

Develop standards for artificial reef materials in the region that continue NJ’s tradition of high quality, pollution-free, and long-lasting materials that create habitats of biological value. Such materials include ships, barges, rock, concrete/construction material, obsolete military tanks, and manufactured reef materials.

Identify sources of high quality reef materials and funding options.

Increase statewide public awareness and concern for habitat that sustains biological ecosystems of importance.

Establish an independent scientific review group including interest groups to review and evaluate artificial reef materials and identify what is best for NJ’s fisheries.

Fishermen have long been leaders in environmental efforts, particularly conservation. Over the years significant progress has been made to improve ocean water quality. Still, threats loom. Recently, state officials advised people not to eat certain amounts of fish or shellfish due to PCBs, dioxins, mercury, and pesticides. Clearly, there are many battles that we must wage together to ensure that future generations will have clean and healthy fish.

Opposition From the Jersey Coast Anglers Association (jcaa)

"The conditions that COA and the American Littoral Society want imposed as part of the agreement are totally unacceptable and so is the attempt to bypass the public hearing process.... Some of there demands (coa) are not based on science but just their feelings. The rest of the demands totally ignore existing science. If we use their criteria we will waste valuable taxpayers money on needless studies. We will also be stopped from accepting any subway cars for at least 10 years and prevented from receiving other materials indefinitly. We can't imagine tha Clean Ocean Action or the American Littoral Society would accept the results of additional studies anyway since they totally ignore the existing science when it doesn't support their ideas...."

I got this info from press releases from both COA and JCAA. The JCAA

It sounds like the JCAA are piping mad about this issue and both sides are standing tough. I will keep you updated.
