Jay's No Bull Fishing ReportThursday

The Edwards brothers from Fair Haven, James is 8 and John is 6  trolling the Reach Channel last Sunday.
A new crop of keeper size stripers have moved into the area. Up the revers and in the bays and also on the surf.
KKat reports:
11/8 - Excellent striped bass bite first thing this morning for the Rob Vogel group from Montclair. A limit catch plus shorts on clams all within the first hour and a half, after which the bite dropped out. Nice to fish without whitecaps today, for a change.

Excellent fishing on Wednesday as well for the Marcus Perry group from Weehawken in a hard west wind. A limit catch of bass to 17 pounds and 30-plus shorts in two drops.

Ron Tucci's group from Totowa had good action on clams Tuesday afternoon, also in a screaming west wind. 37 bass were caught on clams, with only 2 being keepers.

Jay's No Bull Fishing ReportThursday

I guess this has become more of a monthly report, but i will try harder1

today saw some nice small bass action throughout Raritan Bay and parts of Sandy Hook. Many schools popping up with bass rolling on bait from officers Row up to Keyport. Mostly shorts but plenty of action. Last week before the quick nor'easter, the river was full of these bass too. Some decent Keepers were aken within sight of the dock! All methods seem to be working succesfully including clams, eels, and trolling. Nothing too bug yet.

Sensational top water action on Saturday afternoon at the Highlands bridge, big bass crushing the peanuts.
had 2 keepers  on my baby bunker spoon. green with black back over silver.

Sunday morning had 6 shorts in my boat where  the 2 rivers meet while worming.
one keeper 22 pounds at the highlands bridge.

11/4 - Excellent striper fishing today for the Mike Mackey party from Hoboken. The bass bit well on clams until an hour before low water, then co-operated very well on the troll on shad rigs during slack water and the start of the flood. We kept a boat limit of 12 bass to 21 pounds, plus 20 shorts. Bluefish were nowhere to be seen!

Other good bass trips before the blow include the Marcus Perry group, Weehaken, loads of bass & blues on A-47 jigs but few keepers, Terry McPartland crew, Darian, Ct., 6 keepers plus shorts & blues on shad rigs & tubes, Kristen Pirozzi group, Rumson, 8 keepers & 22 shorts on clams.

Capt Rich on the "Just One More" reports:
The largest striped bass of the fall so far was landed on the "Just One More" yesterday. Joe Augeri had the honors. We ran an open boat trip and Joe was one of the callers. The very nice bass weighed nearly 30 lbs. and measures 42". CONGRATULATIONS JOE !  The fish was caught eeling and the water temp. is dropping nicely. The stripers are coming on strong, time to get in one the action.

Jay's No Bull Fishing Report

Too Much Bait! That is what everyone is saying. The bait in the river is truly spectacular. The bass, blues and weakies are crashing on them all up and down the rivers. It is hard to compete within the thick schools of bunker, spearing and mullet. The fish must just be closing their eyes and swimming mouth wide open through the water columns loaded from top to bottom with an easy meal for them.

Captain Stan came down to his party boat docked at Bahrs at 5:00 a.m. in the dark last Friday. He heard some peculiar noises out in the river. It sounded like a whale. He flipped on his hallogen lights and saw an amazing site. Big Bluefish and bass sending entire schhols of bunker out of the water with a load wooshing sound. He said that the bright lights disoriented the blues and they bumped into the side of his wooden hull. He said that his mate Junior caught a couple 12-14 pounders right away and a diamond jig.

I have been having some more fun at the Sea Bright Bridge live lining bass. There is a large concentration of decent size fish under all of the bridges. I have had a few heart pounding moments when the bass had the peaunuts bucnhed up by the sewer pipe. Maybe 50 people fishing on all 3 bridges every night! What are they going to do when they not my bridge down and raise the new one 35 ft??!!

The mudhole is producing some bluefin tuna action. Even a mako caught by a local boat which I heard at the dock.

I met a new charter boat Captain the other night and told him I would give him a plug. (not the lure type) His name is Captain Dan this is website, http://www.skinnydriftercharters.com/photo_album.htm  He seems like a nice guy and a good fisherman. and his wife can sing karaoke! He fishes out of Keyport, which he claims is the striper capital of the world. We in Highlands know better.
This is his wife Johanna.  Give Captain Dan a call.

l

Also I heard from a customer juust back from Montauk, that they are having an incrdible run of 40lb + fish late in their season. Watch out here they come!

Jay's No Bull Fishing Report
The WEAKFISH are in the back of the bay big time. Just like the old days. Plenty of fish and action. The weakfish just started showing up about the last week, or maybe even less, but they are here!  The fish have been up to 23" with plenty of smaller fish mixed in as well as bluefish and even some out of season fluke. Now is the time to go weakfishing as they will probably stay around only till the end of the month. Let's go weakfishing!!
On the casting front, there have been tons of birds, bait and bluefish everywhere. The blues are in the bay, by the Hook and Knoll and all the way down the beach. We have been casting to fish up to 10 lbs. There have even been stripers under certain schools  if you can get down to them past the bluefish. Chumming off shore is producing bluefish to 15 lbs. and the false albies are around. So as you can see the action is really starting to heat up. Time to get out there and tire out your arm.

Look for Sea Bass at the Sandy Hook Reef. Clams or squid work well while drifting.

Stripers are starting to get frisky under the bridges. I have been picking a few on jigs and worms. I lost a big one under the Sea Bright bridge this week. I was using too light of a reel and I got spooled and pulled the hook after about 5 minutes. Two State Troopers were on seen to watch me try to horse it in but they just laughed when the hook came out!

I got this report emailed from Captain Stan. I had to abbreviate it a bit but the last day of Fluke Season aboard the Elaine B on Monday sure looked fun!

GOOD FOOD!

GOOD FUN!

GOOD FISH!

That’s what we had on the Elaine B II on the last day of the 2007 Fluke Season!

THE FLUKEMAN was joined by some of his best EBII fishing buddies for a Final Fluke Day Party on the EBII.  Buckets of chicken, colossal shrimp, a cold-cut platter, crumb cake, chocolate cake, bagels, and watermelon were enjoyed by the EBII fishermen.

Captain Stan had a hot fishing tip so he took the EBII about six miles off-shore to Sea Gull Bank.  And the long ride was worth it!  And we stayed out an extra hour!

Although the fluke gods didn’t help THE FLUKEMAN, some of his fishing friends had very good catches.  Just look and see!

Ok OK I know this report has been not updated in quite a long time. It is not because the fishing has not been great or that I have not been fishing. Actually that is part of the problem. Last report in May ouch! The fishing has been great and I have been getting out much more than in the past. I have not done any offshore trips, but the inshore and river fishing has been just incredible. The big thing is the Fluke fishing actually was and still is very productive, actually unbelieveable to me. When the new draconian size limit and bag limit were announced I figured that the fluke fishery would suffer as far as keeper fish on the dock were concerned. And especially after last years horrible season.  But boy was I wrong! Big fat fluke all season. Last year's complaints of nothing but shorts (just under 16") and sea robins have not been heard hardly at all. I even caught a 7lb fluke a few weeks ago. Look for the pic as soon as Fletcher gets around to emailing it to me.
Catch & Release 10lb at Bahrs Dock. The chef was eyeing it up for the frying pan but Dennis N. believes in releasing the Big Daddy/Mommas. Nice job.he took only 5th place in the Leonardo Fluke Tourney.

.

Joey Safdeye w/ Fluke that is 8.8 Lbs
I spoke to Ed at the Gas dock and he said perhaps we can put this picture in the paper. a lot of pull Bifg Has! haha! We will try.

stripers are quieting down unless you fish real late at night or can find them craching the bunkers offshore. I had some real exciting reports of bass blitzes going on just a few miles off of the beaches.
I have been sailing almost every Tuesday with some clam chowder friends. Capt Fletcher has been guiding us and putting us on some incredible fishing especially in the spring live lining bass. Along with his golden retriever named Corona the Captain of Two Rivers Charters never disappoints always a great time and of course a fish fry feast at the restaurant compliments of Chef Damon and oh yea a few brews from bartender Steve tops off Tuesdays.

Live Lining at the rocks

THE WEAKFISH ARE IN !!!!  I have been receiving many reports of weakfish in the bay and have seen them being cleaned on the dock. They are here!!  Not in the great numbers yet, but I am sure we could put together a good catch. August and September are the weakfish months in the Raritan Bayand up the rivers too. Time to go weakfishing.  I am going in the am in the Shrewsbury. We were out this week looking for weakfish but had no drift and got out a bit late. I blamed it on the Clamfestifval which wiped me out but that is no excuse for fishing. I just overslept a bit because I went to bed too early, if that makes sense. Fletcher and I commented that we had never seen so many peanut bunker. From one end of the bay to the other and out past the rip and way up in the back of the river. We ended up picking 7 kepper fluke up to 3 pounds and a few bluefish for dog Corona. Today I saw large schools moving out with the tide all night in front of the gas dock.

Oh yea and by the way the web cam should be working any day. If anyone knows anything about setting one of these things up I could sure use the help. Something went wrong in the setup for the router, if you what this means call me. 732-872-1245 x12 Also if anyone know how so set up a blog let me know about that too.

Jay's No Bull Fishing Report
May 9 2007

Flounder fishing is still holding up as they are clearly on the move with most of the action off of Sandy Hook near the Cedars, which is basically thew flats off of the Nude Beach. The bluefish have moved into the rivers the last few days scaring the living "b'jesus" out of the winter flounder causing them to pick up and head for there summer grounds far offshore.
Both rivers are full of bunker and bluefish. Reports of stripers as far as Red Bank. The bay is providing some great early season action with keepers starting to hit the dock. Reports of 75 to 100 fish with 10-15 keepers is not uncommon! most are using clam bellies. I guess this is what it was like in the old days.

The American Striper Association is coming to Bahrs Landing in Sandy Hook, NJ May 25th-27th for the Annual Bahrs Landing Striper Tournament. ASA Prize Money for the Bahrs Landing Tournament is a Guarantee’s of $10,000 for 1st place, based on a 50 boat tournament. The Captain’s Meeting is Friday, May 25th at 6pm at Bahrs Landing. For more information, go to  www.fishasa.com . Or call Bahrs Landing at 732-291-9554.

Capt. Richie on the "Just One More" reports in

The Striped Bass are in !  We have benn fishing the last week with good results. Starting last Saturday, April 28, we had aboard the Bob Able {FB} charter. We did some great winter flounder fishing. By the end of the day, we had 34 keeper flounder to 17" !!  Now that is good flounder fishing. We only had one throw back, which we actually could have kept. The flounder were very thick, with nice thick fillets even on the white side. Sunday we had aboard Kevin Markow  who produces his own line of saltwater fishing plugs. We striped bass fished and had 23 stripers to 30" with a bunch of keepers. Monday we had aboard Dave Taub  who fished by himself. Dave caught 12 keeper winter flounder and then we went striped bass fishing. He proceeded to catch 20 striped bass to 29" with his limit of keepers. Monday, Dean Devasia charter had 12 striped bass to 30" and bluefish. Yes, the blues are in!!  Up to 12lbs. Wednesday we had an open boat trip with Chris, Joe, and Bert. They limited out with stripers to 32" and landed a total of 21 all together. It seems these open boat trips are always doing well, even going back to last season. Thursday, Big Glen Glaczek was aboard with his crew. They had 30 striped bass and had fish up to 34". Scott Lavenberg  was aboard Friday and his crew landed only 12 stripes to 30", but went home with bass fillets and plenty of bluefish were landed. Yesterday we had aboard the famous Bluefish Bob Donahue. It was a slow pick of striped bass but they managed 13 stripers with a limit of keepers to 34". Plenty of  6-7lb. bluefish were landed as well. So it seems it is time to go. Water temps. have been anywhere from the low 48 degree mark to 53.6 degrees.

Available dates to charter in June are:  14, 20, 25, 28. That is it. Evenings are available in May and June,  just call for availability. 908-472-2684.
Capt Mark on the Long Shot, has updated his 32 Foot Downeast B.H.M. with 420 Cats and a new paintjob. The fish can't stay away! Mark is now in his second year of service and has a few available dates for the striper season. http://longshotchartersnj.com/

Jay's No Bull Fishing Report
April 18 2007

The weather was a little messy this week but as the sun starts to come out and the weather warms up I am finally starting to get some reports.
I have numerous reports of bait from points all over the river. And something that I do not ever remeber seeing on Sunday I spotted a Northern Gannet flying around the river in front of the restaurant. it was at the height of the storm and seemed to not have any problem navigating the 50 mile/hour gusts. The next day there were over 3 dozen of these big things bomb diving into the out going current feeding on what I believe was herring. They stayed under for about 10 seconds and came up with a blast of water and took off into the winds!  Very Cool. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Gannet
-
Capt. Ken on the K-Kat charter boat reports...Super good fishing today for the Ed Denver party from Allentown, PA. We were anchored in western Raritan bay by 7 am, and had the bass right away on clams. By trips end we had well over 100, including 5 keepers, and another 10 that were just barely short. The big surprise came when I decided to lower a flounder rod halfway through the trip. I ended up with 20 fat keepers by myself!

and Montauk Mike (who is really from Red Bank) reports....

hi jay
just a short note to keep in touch and let you know i had about  20 short bass and my limit of flounders  at the oceanic bridge on
saturday, 2 hours before high until 2 hours on the out going. chunked the bass with clams. caught most of the flounders on worms.
cold water, 42 to 44 degrees.

April 1 2007

The Clean Ocean Action Flounder Tourney last Saturday kicked of the 2007 season with a bang. Over 75 fisherman pre registered for the annual free event. The winner once again for at least the 3rd time, Ray Bradford from Rumson, put a 3.16 lb flattie on the scale to take the $30 plus the handmade plaque. Ray usually fished the area of the Shrewbury near Rumson Country Club. 2nd Place was weighed in by Monica Oswald 2.61lbs and 3rd place by Michael Borpora at a close call 2.53lbs. This year featured a rare good weather day for the tourney. Held here at Bahrs Landing it was a fun day with lots of good fishing, good chowder and a good cause. From all report flounder were caught in good numbers and sizes in both rivers.

The flounder fishing has continued to be good all week in most of the usual spots. Blood or sand worms plus some good clam chum should do the trick. I did get many reports of schoolie bass all over the rivers and bays with a few keepeers too!

Jay's No Bull Fishing Report

November 27, 2006

Thanksgiving Day turned out to be another wash-out with the little Nor"Easter. I was planning a little pre-turkey bass jigging, but the wind and rain kept me and brother Dave at the dock... (aka in bed). The subsequent days were beautiful and there were many small bass to be had. With just a few keepers mostly on those who trolled rigs. Today Tuesday was nice and I spoke to one die hard at the gas dock  with over 30 fish and 2 keepers in the cooler. He was fishing in between the channels all by himself trolling rigs.

Blackfish season (8 per man bag limit) has now been open since November 15th. the Tautog aka blackfishing has been stellar, when the conditions are conducive for the little fighters to feed. Anchoring up and fishing with green crabs, most fisherman both expert and novice are finding an abundance of big fish on the Sandy Hook reef and the Shrewsbury Rocks. It is too bad that most marinas force their slip owners out of the water by the time this fishery really heats up. Blackfishing has prooved to be a real boon to local sportfishing industry in our area. Due to the newly created artificial reef along with other things such as conservation and cleaner waters this fishing is excellent! Some days after a northeaster, the blacks refuse to bight but once the sea calms down, boy do they get hungry as witnessed yesterday out on the reef. Opening weekend prooved to be a sign of things that were to come and so far did. Witness

Here is a picture of a blackfish caught 11/19/06.  Fish was caught by Steve Foster of Oceanport. Fish was weighed in @ Bahrs 11/19/06  11.5lbs. Fish was weighed in @ Bahrs Landing 11/19/06  11.5lbs.

Trolling in between the channels and down the beach is proving to be the most dependable. Umbrella Rigs with shads or tubes. Live eels in the rip and also in between the channels are working too. I fished yesterday and had 2 keeper bass a bunch of schoolies and a ton of bluefish. We were trolling and jigging the outflow pipe off of the Highlands Bridge in the ocean. The sewage pipe is laid down with a good amount of rocks providing some of the only structure from the tip of the Hook to the Shrewsbury Rocks. The bait desperately seek it out and when they do the bass and blues cruise in and chase them up on the beach. The birds scavaging for scraps can make the sky white as clouds as they did yesterday when the sun came through and lit up there wings.

'Just One More' fishing report, 11/2/06

The fall striper season is in full swing! On Tuesday, we had Dave Taub aboard. And Dave landed the largest striped bass of his life on an eel. He was impressed it was 38" and 19 lbs. Wednesday we did an open boat trip. We had aboard Jim, JJ, Joe, ED and Ed's friend. What a trip they had. From right after leaving the dock, for the next 4 hours, we cast to surface rolling stripers under the birds !!  I lost count after 35 stripers were caught and released safely. Most were in the 24-26" range. But some larger ones were kept for the cooler. After the bird action died down, we went eeling. We landed stripers to 22 lbs. on the eels!!  On the way in, we spotted more birds, but this time they turned out to be bluefish, we landed some and went in. What a super day, by 11am, we were fishing in ' T' shirts ! So it is time to catch stripers. I will be runing more open boat striped bass trips this season, including a blackfish trip. You'll get the emails. Open dates for the rest of this month are: Nov. 8,13,14,16,20,21,23,27,28,29,30.  I will be home tonight. 908-412-9147. and on the boat the next 4 days or so... 908-472-2684.    www.just1morecharters.com   THANKYOU.

Jay's No Bull Fishing Report
Captain Stan on the ElainB 2 reports on his first bass trip of the season
Hi Jay;
We are now sailing for Striped Bass every Thursday night 6:30 pm till
11:30 pm. Last Thursday nights trip started off pretty good drifting eels in
Sandy Hook channel on a beautiful night until 8:30 when the wind came
through at 35 to 40 knots out of the Northwest so we anchored on the Knoll
and fished with clams and the Bass were biting until we quit at 10:00. The
weather wasn't getting any better.

                 Elaine B II
                    Capt. Stan

The annual fall Hi-Mar Fishing Tournament had no rain, but sometimes windy conditions. On Friday Night, most of the
fish were caught in the Shrewsbury River and some at the Shrewsbury Rocks. The remainder of the fish, were
caught throughout Raritan Bay from the back of the Reach Channel to Sandy Hook Channel. Some entrants
were able to run down to Ortley Beach and southern areas to fish pods of bunker, with large bass beneath them.

Captains weighed their fish all through the tournament, with the majority of the big fish being weighed on Sunday. The
 leader board kept changing.

The Lady Angler prize went to Kathie Krim on the Jersey Devil, 22.6 lbs.

The largest fish of the tournament was 29.3 lbs. by Brian Rice on the Jersey Devil.

Captain Kenny on the "KKAT"
10/17 - The striper fishing in the Sandy Hook area remains generally good, although the weather restricts where we can fish much of the time.

That was the case this afternoon for the Jack Hamill charter from Spotswood. We tried to get in to the ocean to fish bait, but were turned back by 6-8 foot seas and 30 mph southeast winds. Trolling in the bay started as a very slow pick, but ended up an all out slaughter as the birds began to work. We boxed a limit of bass, released two dozen shorts, and returned to the dock early.

Captain Brian Rice on the "Jersey Devil"
Well the crew of the Jersey Devil has been working hard over the past month or so. We had a tough time at our first FLW Tournament in Jersey City in which we only caught short fish in very tough conditions. We fished the Hi-Mar 40 hour striper tournament over this past weekend and did very well. This is known as one of the biggest local tournaments in our area and we took both Calcutta’s and Top Lady Angler and second place overall. We ended up making a 30+ mile run in our 31’ Contender to find the fish, so again I want to thank all of our sponsors and supporters.
Next stop is the Cape May ASA so hopefully we will back up our win from the June Sandy Hook ASA.
Thanks again. Captain Brian Rice

'JUST ONE MORE' FISHING REPORT, 10/16/06

THE BIG BASS ARE IN !!! The striped bass fishing has really picked up in the last couple of days. Eels are the ticket, but I have been seeing more and more bass working on top under the birds. Sunday , yesterday, we had aboard the Bill Kaner group. We eeled all day and ended up with 8 very nice bass to 38". Two of the stripers went 20 lbs. !!  And the samllest bass was 31". Not a bad day when you can say that!  We had other bites and some others on but were lost. Right in the beginning of the trip in the morning, Bill Kaner Sr. hooked a very nice striper. He fought it for 3-4 minutes, and it just simply let go. Judging by the bend in the rod and the drag going out and Bill not being able to make any head way on the fish for that time, I believe it would have been the biggest of the day. Between 25 and 30 lbs. The hook just simply pulled. There is plenty of action as the bluefish are still there and turning out eels into stogies !!

Also have been seeing some nice bass being taken from the Rumson Bridges at night and just before dawn.

Joe Raccioppi from Middletown fishing with his son last weekend on the beach near Atlantic Highlands/Highlands, had 2 keepers on plugs.

Capt Rich reports from last week.
The featured charter of the week is the Mike Kochen party. We went weakfishing and had a pretty good day. We landed weakfish up to 20 " and many smaller ones, keeping 20 fish. We also threw back plenty of "spikes", about 12" fish which I guess bodes well for the future. They were hitting  sandworms in the Reach channel. The water temp. was still high at about 66.2 degrees. This three day stretch of bad weather will probably push out the weakfish but start the bass biting.

Sept 27, 2006 Jay Cosgrove's No Bull Fishing Report

Weakfish are finally biting. I have reports of the being picked up in the rip on jigs and peanut bunkers. The reach channel at buoy 6, 8 and further up also in the Sandy Hook Rip on the incoming. Some fish are up to 23". Look for them to stick around hopefully for another week or two and be ready to say goodbye. Last year some guys had weakies in the deep holes on the Sandy Hook side of the Highlands bridge feeding on peanuts, all over 6 pounds. They were under the blues and bass!

Stripers are starting to provide some action also in the rip and on Flynn's Knoll. Schoolies are being picked up under the bridges on worms and eels. The bluefish are making themsleves known under the bridges too. I have some reports of bunkers way up the Navesink with bass breaking on them at night. The bunkers schools are coming in all sizes lately. Just before sunrise is when they are most active.

Billy Rhee checks in from Kona Hi. After a long quiet night of chumming we got taken down by two of these guys on the troll. When Sam Choy Junior spotted seven frigates( possibly 8) circling above he knew it was our time. As he said," Billy don't touch the drag Billiy," I knew we would be getting bit soon. Tim and I got ready and harnessed up. As Capt Curwin approached the action our port side lures got blasted about 5 seconds apart. Tim's fish pulled hooks at the boat( Jobu's with 90 lbs of drag?), and I was lucky enough to land mine with the teams help. Tim the hockey goalie now tackle owner on gaff, Capt Sam with broken wrist as wire man and the Mangler on controls; was enough to say this fish was going to market. The lure, "Black Smoke," was a custom by Curwin rigged on 300 lb fluoro. The reel was a 80 Tiagra with 100 lb diamond and the rod a 80-130 stand up bent butt by Melton Tackle. A fifteen minute battle at 35 lbs of drag; this was my biggest yellowfin and tuna on stand up at 165lbs.Sept 22, 2006Jay Cosgrove's No Bull Fishing Report

Peanut bunker are moving with the tides in and out of the river and down the beach. Small blues today, and last night a good concentration of stripers have found them. With the cooler nights the triggering the fall feeding season for the stripers it should turn on just on schedule for the first weekend of the fall. The "peanut" bunker this year are true peunut size. I think we have some killies in the tank bigger than these little baits. They can't yet buck the tide so they move with it and when the tide slacks they seek refuge under the bridges and in the docks. Most guys are live lining them or using 3 to 4 inch rubber shads.

The bluefish are of course right on top of them too. Up the river there are nice size snappers. We have a couple of 10 lb blues under the bridge. If you want some fun read my reports from last Oct. It should be more of the same starting now! KKAT reported: - Exceptional striped bass fishing for the John Litowinsky party from Wall Twnsp. today. The guys caught over 50 bass on clams, including 13 keepers. A half dozen weakfish and a couple of croakers were added to the catch on worms in the bay. Capt Rich Reports: Monster bluefish were landed Sunday by the Jeff and Linda Seip charter. The ocean was a little nasty at 17 Fathoms with a large east swell still coming in and wind about 15 mph out of the north, but the blues were there. They ran from a low of 4 lbs. to a high of 15 lbs. With most being Slammers! The water temp. was still 70.6 degrees out there and in the bay. They were happy bringing all those fillets back to PA. We did not see any false albies or bonito even though we were chumming for them. Monday had the Ray and George Rogers charter aboard for great weakfish action. A near limit was landed in the bay with multiple fish measuring 25". Fluke, bluefish and croakers were also landed. The bay was jam packed with peanut bunker. There were large schools everywhere. We tried a few drifts in the rip before going weakfishing for stripers with the out going tide but had no luck. We did see a few landed, but the water is still too warm for consistant action. It should break wide open in October!! TUNA

Pete Cherasia on the Shark Byte fished the canyon, had his limit of yellowfin on Sunday Night. up to 90lbs. Sal Canizaro on the "Lady Diana" also has had a couple of good trips fishing the Elbow, also with some nice bigger fish.

Capt Stan on the Elaine B is planning on running some night bass trips starting next week. I will keep you posted. Now that the restaurant season is winding down I should have more time for fishing and reporting.

Local boy David Goldsmith has set up a nice charter business in Miami. I saw him recently here at the restaurant and it sounds like his 42 Jim Smith "Nadine" can catch some fish. Dave's email is islandpro@gmail.com

Cranford angler bags winner
Ewa Jackson of Cranford barely knocked Capt. Mike Greco out of first place by a quarter-pound Saturday, when she weighed a 9 1/2-pounder in the Sandy Hook Bay Anglers Fluke Tournament, and that near doormat stood up to win the Silver Anniversary Tournament, which drew 149 boats.

Big Fluke are in!  Fluke in the river and Sandy Hook Bay, try the Rip too. One of our regulars fished all day with not much luck and on there way in stopped infront of the Ammo pier in the deep water. They used killie and squid and on the first drift had an 8lber.

Buoy 4 in the Shrewbury is starting to be productive for fluke as well. Stripers are to be found off of Deal (Red Church). Crashing on numerous schools of bunker. I am still seeing pods of bunker in the river and have reports of them all down the beach all the way to Cape May. Some local guys took a trip to Cape May and reported excellent Bluefin action at the Hotdog. They have been live lining bunkers.

It seems that this may be a great year for crabbing. Already the docks are lined with blueclaws, which seems early to see so many. Most are small but are getting ready to shed. I am sure that people are not the only ones feasting on these. Stripers love them too!

Capt Brian Rice and crew win the June ASA 2006

View the RESULTS

Some BIG bass were taken all June. It was incredible. The hot spots being the beaches from Sandy Hook to Asbury. One of the hottest spopts turned out to be right out of my office window. It started with just a few boats but soon turned into a fleet. Most guys were fishing fresh bunkers amd live lining.

Kevin Meyerhoff with another nice 40 lb. bass.

Capt kenny on the KKAT reports that they have shifted focus to fluke, although there are still some nice striped bass around if you are willing to put in the time, and provided there is light boat trafiic.

Mike Hetrick and friends from Bethlehem, PA, put a catch of 16 keeper fluke to 3.5 pounds together on Sunday, 7/9. Massive amounts of shorts, plus about 25 3-4 pound blues spiced to catch, which was made in Raritan bay and the ocean.

The Doug Ahle group from J.M. Ahle company in South River had 12 keeper fluke to 4 pounds on Saturday, 7/8.

Andrew Pritchard and his 9 year old son Alexander had exceptional striped bass fishing on Friday, 7/7, while chunking fresh bunker off Monmouth Beach. The pair landed a dozen bass to a high of 35 pounds, losing quite a few more plus bluefish. It was Alexander's first saltwater fishing experience, no doubt he is hooked for life!

Melissa Donoforio and friends had good striped bass chunking on the afternoon of Friday, 7/7. The group caught their limit bunker chunking off Monmouth Beach, then caught a few keeper fluke tight to the beach in 20 feet of water.

Fluke are moving in as I have seen some nice keepers in the river by buoy 2-4 . Use live killies. There have been many pods of "candy bar" bunkers moving up river and it is unusual to not see anything chasing them. George Feneise told me that he had not seen a bluefish all weekend. But there have been pods of dolphin in the ocean that are probably scaring them off.

A few reports of weak fish but nothing heavy yet.

I took out some of my friends from the Bucknell University athletic department yesterday. I hired Capt Mark on the "LONG SHOT". We had an excellent morning claming for bass on the outgoing tide. We limited out as I had the pool winner and head basketball Coach Flannery and head Football Coach Landis were in a heated battle for "high hook" for the day. They were still debating the final count as they headed back to campus on rt 80.

Captain Mark and his mate John put us on the fish early and often. He runs a great boat! Thanks guys.

Capt Rich on the "JUST ONE MORE" reports in:NOTHING BUT BIG STRIPERS AND FULL LIMITS ARE COMING OVER THE RAILS ON THE 'JUST ONE MORE'. LAST WEEK, THE FOLLOWING CHARTERS DID SUPER ON THE STRIPERS UP TO 40" AND PLENTY RELEASED TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY. CARL BERTRAM, JIM TWAITE, DENNIS MARGIOTTA, FRANK BLANCH, TOM FISCHER, ED HUBERT, BILL STEPHENS, MIKE VAN BRUNT, AND BOB DONAHUE. NOT MANY SMALLER FISH ARE BEING SEEN UNDER 28" ANYMORE. BLUEFISH ARE HERE IN A BIG WAY WITH MANY CHOPPERS BEING LANDED ON EVERY TRIP TO 12LBS.!!   WATER TEMP. IS  61.6 DEGREES AND STEADILY GETTING WARMER. SO EACH TRIP HAS PLENTY OF ACTION.

The American Striper Association is taking huge strides toward becoming the nations leading contender for the recognition that comes from being the "Premier Tournament Event in the Country". The soon to be announced list of Sponsors will read like the Who's Who of Fish Boat Manufacturers along with an impressive list of Accessories Manufacturers for everything from Electronics to Trailers.

This powerhouse consortium of boat builders and their suppliers promises to serve up a World Class Event with World Class prizes that will make the titles of 'National Champion' and 'Angler of the Year' worth a whole lot more than simple bragging rights. Along with the upscale prize packages, the group is already putting together an impressive media package to provide International televised coverage of the events. The world of fishing should prepare itself for a new and exciting ASA.

Capt. Mark on the Long Shot had Fish & Game to greet them at the dock today. Mark being a straight shooter and not one to bend the rules made out ok with the friendly warden. They were looking to give out fines for undersized bass and fillets. Fillets are now a no-no, you must bring in the whole fish unless you have a permit. Apparently some fines were issued in the area. Capt mark said that the fish were all big today as they only had to release one.

Capt Mark started don the beach were it was slow. Then moved up to Roamer Shoals and had excellent action right away. They limited out with some pretty big fish using clam bellies.

Capt Kenny on the KKAT report in:
The excellent striped bass fishing continues in middle to western Raritan Bay. We have been trying to fish with fresh bunker whenever possible, drifting with chunk baits around the bunker schools can be a total slaughter on some trips, a decent pick on others. Monster bluefish are always in the mix, keeping rods bent and costing us a fortune in circle hooks. When bait is tough to get or drifting conditions poor, we will pull bunker spoons with generally excellent results, though the blues will be a nuisance here as well. Our larger fish on most trips will go around 25 pounds. Trips the past few days include Mark Hollingsworth and his dad Harold from Lancaster, PA, Ed Szott and crew from Rutherford, the Bill Deats group from Marlboro, Nels Shugart and friends from Bethlehem, PA, Dave Chonski and crew from Allentown, PA, and Jack Humphrey and the boys from Sayreville.

Jim the Banker Reports in:

Jay by the way I did go to the Keansburg pier this Sunday and had a blast with the blue fish.  Caught six on bait and four using a popping plug.   I met a very nice gentleman named Robert and he showed me how to use the popping plug. He was there with his atom and the left amazing bite marks in the wood.  He was nice enough to give about 11 fish to people fishing the pier who did not catch any fish. and in the end when my cooler was too full with these six pound choppers I gave away six to I caught on the plugs.   She did confirm that this Friday she will have a special night session for the diehards like me who never get enough fishing. It will run from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM Saturday and she will have plenty of bait.  I thought I would pass on the word  just incase you have any friends that may be interested.  She only does this about twice a year so it is a special occasion. Fishing the pier sure beats the heck out fishing the beach and getting eaten by the sand fleas Well, hope things are going well for you.  Thanks for the help.

Captain Fletcher Chayes has had some decent fishing this week. He took a charter up the Navesink on Monday due to the windy conditions in the bay. He scored great on bunker chunks and rubber shads. One interesting tidbit, one of his bass had what looked to be a lamprey eel attached to the gills. I have never seen this before but a quick search on google reveals that it just may be. We are going to find out more about this. We have a pic but it is a bit shocking the way one of these suckers works.

DJ Nalepa, 13 of Red Bank, fishing with his pop for the first trip of the Spring, limited out on some big stripers trolling the Reach channel just past the Ammo. Pier. They pulled some bunkie spoons on Sunday.
Capt Rich on "Just Ona More" reports in:

Hey Jay
THE STRIPERS ARE GETTING LARGER AND THE BLUEFISH HAVE BEEN UP TO 10 LBS. PLENTY OF ACTION. HERE ARE THE EVENING DATES OPEN IN MAY: 8-11, 14, 16,17, 22-25, 27. A COUPLE OF THOSE ARE WEEKEND DATES. FULL DAYS STILL LEFT OPEN IN JUNE ARE: 19, 21,22, 24 [SATURDAY], 26-29. A LOT OF STRIPED BASS TO BE CAUGHT ON THOSE DAYS.
Capt Rich
K-Kat Report:
4/28 - A good steady pull of bass and lots of bluefish today for the Joe Agente party from Newark, although fresh bunker was tough to get this morning. The largest of 9 bass went 22 pounds, they bit from the top of the flood right through the slack and into the ebb before slowing up as the tide ran harder. A fresh northeast breeze made things a bit lumpy for a while.

4/27 - The Tom Cordhuff party from Lancaster, PA enjoyed a non-stop bite today in Raritan Bay. Fresh bunker was the bait, the largest of 6 bass went 33.5 pounds, and the bluefish were thick as bees, keeping rods bent between stripers. A few more smaller bass were added on clams to the east after the bunker bite died.

Jay's No Bull Fishing Report
Getting some reports of big bass out in the bay. Some of the guys have broken out the trolling rods and bunker spoons. Live liners are working it too. We should have some pictures soon. There have some live liners working the Highlands Bridge (top side) at night and I have seen only small fish. The bunkers are schooling up at night and they can be cast netted but who has the time? We are hoping to have our tanks up and running this weekend filled with fresh bunkies from the pound netters.Capt Fletcher Chayes, while breakin in his new Parker, was trolling a Stretch 25 by the pound nets this week. He was surprised to catch his first big weakfish of the season. He said it was about ten pounds and released it full of roe. Sorry no photo, I told him to use his camera phone next time.

Hey Jay
After a weekend of blown out and washed out trips, we took an exploratory trip into Raritan bay to see what was going on with the bass bite on fresh bunker. Joining me were mate Chris Devereaux, along with Bill Boardman from Rumson and John Litowinsky from Wall Twnsp. Pulling spoons from the Reach channel to Great Kills harbor yielded neither a bite or readings of any kind, and the harbor itself seemed to be devoid of bunker. Running back to the western portion of the Reach, we found a small pod of bunker down deep, the cast net only yeilded a few. It was enough, though, as a drop on readings near the bunker resulted in 5 bass to 20 pounds in the box,  and all the bluefish bite-offs you could tolerate on small chunks.

5/18 - The best catch of keeper-sized bass so far this season was boated this afternoon for the Frank Nardi group from Basking Ridge. 10 keepers to 34 inches went in the box, along with 50-plus shorts between 23 and 27 inches. All the fish came on clams. Other trips that had good action with predominantly short stripers over the past week include Glen Rispaud and friends from Spring Lake, the John Litowinsky crew from Wall Twnsp., Bill Deats and crew from Marlboro, and the Rob Vogel group from Montclair.

Rutgers University and the Sandy Hook NOAA/Fisheries Lab and are about
to conclude year one of a two year
Winter Flounder spawning habitat study. The RU website is quite
informative and looks to provide progress
updates. It seems the main goal is to identify the precise spawning
areas using hi-tech tracking equipment.
Dredging in all N.J. Coastal rivers and bays have been restricted by
the feds, due to the recent increased
protections by the NMFS Protected Resources Division. The ultimate
goal, as I can tell,  is to understand
the spawning events within an estuary, in the hopes that this might
leave some room for winter dredging in
a way  that does not impact the flounder.

The NOAA/Fisheries Lab is also going to be tracking several species
over the Spring/Summer season in the Navesink/Shrewsbury Rivers also.
During the boating/fishing season please keep your eyes open for the
marked equipment and report any fish with tags that you might catch.
They will be distributing flyer's about the program in the near future.
Hi  Jay;

Yes there are , flounder fishing at the pier has been OK  the average catch has been 4 to 8 big fish per person , yesterday's pool was taken by Al Orduna from Perth Amboy with a 18 inch fish.

Also the Navesink Bridge has been very goo for flounders.
